This issue of Air Model Special concentrates on the RF-4 Phantom series! The Japan Air Self Defense Force’s RF-4E/RF-4EJ Phantom reconnaissance aircraft will be retired at the end of 2019; its history began in September 1964 with the RF-4C handed over to the U.S. Air Force. It was reborn as a reconnaissance aircraft after being redesigned with its short fighter-type nose extended and equipped with three cameras and infrared reconnaissance equipment, as well as radar with terrain tracking ability. It has been in service for 25 years with the U.S. Marine Corps and 30 years with the U.S. Air Force, and has taken part in many battles from the Vietnam War to the Gulf War. Aside from the U.S. Marine Corps and Air Force, export-type RF-4Es are operated by West Germany, Iran, Israel, Japan, Greece and Turkey.

The JASDF introduced the RF-4E in 1974. Over the past 45 years, it has been used for tactical purposes as well as analysis of large-scale disasters.
