The Vickers Viscount was the right airplane at the right time. The demand for higher performance and more comfortable air travel was met by the development and mating of the Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop engine to the Viscount airframe. As a short-haul operator, the Viscount was so successful that in 1956 there were actually more flying in the United States and Canada than in the whole of Europe.
