A tactical competition is a competition held between units to imrpove the operational skills of the Self-Defense Forces. In the Japan Air Self-Defense Force fighter aircraft division, fighter aircraft and pilots selected from all fighter squadrons perform simulated air battles with enemy flight instructors. Evaluation is based not only on judgment of shootdowns; cooperation with wingmen and tactical ability are also required. Many of the fighters participating in this competition receive the attention of aviation fans with nose art, markings, and sometimes squadron-specific paint jobs.
