With 12 609 units, the P-47D was the most prolific of all Thunderbolts. It was only deployed in Europe. After the Japanese attack the U.S. Air Corps required fighter aircraft with greater range, in particular their vulnerable bombers required a long-range fighter escort. The solution was further development of the P-47 fitted with the new P&W R-2800-57 twin radial engine producing 2838 hp and a greater fuel capacity by redesigning the wing. With maximum take-off weight of over 9 tons and a range in excess of 2000 km the P-47N set an absolute record for single engine fighters. Mass production began in March 1945, after an order for 550 P-47N-1-RE’s. Subsequent production lots included under-wing racks for up to 16 missiles as standard equipment.
