The prototype Reppu, developed as a successor to the Zero Fighter, did not produce satisfactory results due to insufficient engine power, and in the summer of 1944, it was feared that its development would be halted. At this point, Mitsubishi decided to switch to their own engine, which they had insisted on from the beginning of development. Flight tests conducted two months later confirmed a significant improvement in performance, keeping hopes alive for mass production. However, as the war situation worsened, these test aircraft could not be improved, and repeated air raids meant that mass production was far from possible; this aircraft ended the war as a “phantom fighter.”
