From 1983 till 1998 the E-2C Hawkeye was the sole AEW platform in the JASDF. Thirteen aircrafts were ordered between 1983 and 1994, making Japan the world’s second largest operator of the E-2C force. The former U.S. Navy E-2C aircraft, originally designed in the 1950s by Grumman, were first put into service in Japan with the 601 Hikotai at Misawa in 1987. On March 2005, the unit was redesigned into the Hiko Keikai Kanshitai.

The E-2C Hawkeye has a trio of detection systems which are able to detect sea and land targets in excess of 300 nautical miles. This long-range radar coverage enables the aircraft to provide warning of 30 minutes against hostile intruders flying at Mach 1.0 speed. With its superior radar performance and a suite of communications equipment, the E-2C Hawkeye is a powerful airborne weapon to command and control any activities that JASDF takes place from the ocean surface to the sky and across the seaplanes.
