From the box description:
Just after World War II, there was a growing demand for commercial air travel. As Douglas’ rival Lockheed was developing the various models of their Constellation, the manufacturer answered with their own type of growth variant of the DC-4 that incorporated a pressurised cabin and would become the DC-6. Initially, the DC-6 was tailored to be a military transport aircraft (known as the C-118), but as the war ended, Douglas quickly realised that it would have to turn to the commercial market instead. Late in 1944, American Airlines placed an order for 50 units and United Air Lines followed soon afterwards. The DC-6 first flew in February of 1946 with deliveries to airlines commencing in November of 1946. The DC-6 saw enormous success over the years with the early model DC-6 giving way to the later model DC-6A & DC-6B which featured many upgrades, including more powerful engines, more range and a 5 foot fuselage stretch.
Production of all types of the DC-6 ended in 1958, with more than 700 commercial and military variants being produced. Although long gone from front line service, there are approximately 50 examples still operating today either hauling freight or as a special transport.
