The XF-108 Rapier was developed in 1957 by the U.S. Air Force as a long-range interceptor and escort fighter with a top speed of Mach 3; a mockup was created in 1959. However, its development was discontinued on Sept. 23 of the same year due to budgetary issues, insufficient cruising range, and the shift of nuclear attacks to the ICBM, which neglected bombers and reduced the demand for escort fighters.
