The prototype XP-47B first flew in 1941 and was adopted as the P-47B. Later, the P-47C was developed by modifying the P-47B, and further improvements resulted in the P-47D.

The P-47D was the most produced variant with 12,602 units built. Continuous improvements were made during production, including the introduction of the bubble canopy from the P-47D-25 model and increased range by adding internal fuel tanks.
