The F-15J Eagle was the main fighter of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force protecting the skies over Japan. It’s based on the U.S. Air Force’s F-15C and is equipped with JASDF’s original equipment; it began deployment in 1982, and it still plays a major role in Japan’s air defense. It is also deployed at the JASDF’s Komatsu Air Base, and two units — the 303rd Squadron and the 306th Squadron — are keeping an eye on the air defense over the Sea of Japan. The 306th Squadron was founded in 1981, and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year; in commemoration of that, one of the unit’s F-15Js was specially painted and unveiled to the delight of fans everywhere.
