The Beechcraft Staggerwing was — and remains — one of the finest civilian aircraft ever built. It was the brainchild of Walter Beech, whose dream was to produce a high-performance five-place luxury biplane with a top speed of over 200 MPH, landing speed of 60 MPH, sound aerodynamics and ease of control. He succeeded brilliantly. Tests of the first model 17 in 1932 yield performance figures superior to many fighter planes of the day!

The B-17L of 1934 featured retractable landing gear and set the pattern for all subsequent Staggerwings through the G-17S, which was last built in 1948. Only 781 Staggerwings were built from 1933 to 1948, of which 353 were commercial models and 428 were for military use. More than 150 of the 250 existing Staggerwings are licensed and flown regularly by their proud and envied owners, half of whom are airline pilots. It figures: a Staggerwing is to an airliner as a sports car is to a bus!
