The Hs123 has demonstrated admirable military activity, despite the fact that only 300 units were manufactured. It was first used in the Spanish Civil War, under Franco’s nationalist’s colors, and then fought in all of the German WWII campaigns, with the exception of the battle of England and the African front. Because of its robust structure, it could remarkably resist enemy hits, and could also fly under the tough conditions of the Russian winter, when other more modern aircrafts were grounded. Therefore, it became very popular with the crews, and was nicknamed “Angelito” (Little Angel) in Spanish, and “Obergefreiter” (Sergeant Major) in German.
